Fresher's Fair
« on: July 23, 2009, 10:39:06 am »
So Guys & Ladies The New term is in a few months and for the Fresher Fair happening on the 28th September til 4th October, and has anyone got any cool ideas we could use to attract new member to the Society?
Me and some of the other members of the society already have a few ideas but fresh new ideas are very much appreciated.

Also if possible if you have any free time it would be great if you could come help us at the stand.

Thanks again and lets have an awesome year  ;D

Naturally, il be attending to "peddle our wares"

As for ideas, gameplay footage is welcome on a TV, LAN game footage especially.
Pictures from activities the society has done before, this may include lans, game nights?
Some small home-made flyers saying who we are and what we do.
(This may include some little mocking of the other "Games" society ;D)
Perhaps (If space permits) we could have a Super smash brawl Game running, perhaps a projector?

Anyone can add more, obviously, those are just basic ideas to bring new people in.

I look forward to see what everyone else may suggest  ;D

Videos and interactive games are always the main puller... i'd say try and get a projector from somewhere if you can - Mike is a possibility as I said in the email. Smash bros. is a great idea as the usual guitar hero is good but only 2 player :)

Also, it's a good idea to ask him in advance for the steam posters etc. and maye this year you could get some of the official alienware posters up - there are some really good posters to advertise the rooms that they use in the corridors and stuff I think.

All the photos from the events should be available on the photobucket account and some more are in the forum gallery. I still have the slideshow of old events photos that I put on the projector one of the games nights if you'd like that just let me know.

I also have the society equipment with me (switch and power hub as well as some stuff for the uni xbox), if these are needed for freshers' then I'll try and get them to somebody before then.

well we could do a mini gaming competition where the winner had their membership fee paid but here are some points to consider.
- are the fees different if you buy a card or something im not clued up but is it £10 for everyone?
- to be fair it would have to be competition that runs the whole day so people that come at different times have a chance of winning, I.e a time trial racing type games or a game where you get a score for a level. the game selection is quite important as ideally it's something everyone has at least a chance of winning.

Some game suggestions (don't have to be for a comp):
-Mario kart (time trail or VS)
-Left 4 Dead survival with 3 ai players. ( by having ai assistance give most people a chance of winning and makes it unpredictable, although might be too long could be 30mins per round.)
-Other survival games? COD5,UT2004 others i don't know of?
- WII games i don't really know a specific title but im sure there are plenty of games there that would work well.

ok bah im don't really follow what's going on in the console scene so i think others would come up with better suggestions.

just thought up another possibility is a small Computer games based quiz that only take like <5mins to do and who ever get the highest score at the end of the day will have their fee paid.

Anyway if you did need another pair of hands i might be able to help out but im not sure at this point.

I have an official response from Anthony about the card next year.

Quote from: anthony statham
You join the individual societies and we will write the name of the society on the cards. This will ensure that the societies receive the relevant funding. It has always been the case that students pay the relevant fee to the relevant society, however we are making this clearer this year.

Kind Regards,

Anthony

So he's saying that people have to pay £10 per society they join (that is the minimum fee we are allowed to charge for running an official society). However, you could also charge something for the games night if you wanted - i'd say 50p or £1 each week wouldn't really stop anybody coming and you really would rack up some cash for games etc.

The signups don't usually give us alot of cash because of the misinterpretation of the signup fees in previous years, as Anthony notes. Therefore, we can assume that this year now that the system is automated electronically you will receive the proper 50% of all signups as budget.

The problem we had last year with the automated signups was that nobody at the fair had their p-numbers or cards yet, let alone had signed up to their online presence and so couldn't sign up for the soc online at our table without first registering for the union website... I'm not sure whether this is resolved this year or not.

Could we rent out some bikini-laden womenz playing L4D or Halo 3 for Freshers? I'd instantly purchase a membership if I was confronted with that. I swear we had one or two female LANers this year (or we could borrow the Loughbrough ones of course).

we could meet up on skype and properly discuss these ideas

I'll add you on Skype good sir

well we could do a mini gaming competition where the winner had their membership fee paid

Would that be during Freshers week? Lots of freshers playing FPSes, etc would take wayyy too long though if someone's prepared to pony up the £10 its a pretty good marketing ploy if you got everyone doing a lap on Mario Kart or something.

hmm well i can bring my wii along, however i dont have mario kart or the preferable steering wheel, maybe some other mini games too for a small comp.

on a side note, i was just thinking on game nights maybe we should have genre themed games, eg one week it'll be fps, the other fighting and the next strategy games, just a thought.
