Netbook?
« on: February 17, 2010, 04:59:55 pm »
Hey guys,

Any suggestions on a netbook I can use at DMU?

I've never owned a laptop or netbook, I build my own PC's, so this is a tough choice for me. Aiming for a price range of around £200-£300.

I was stuck between choosing an Z-series or N-series Intel Atom CPU, but the N-series seems to be the better choice: more powerful CPU and still a considerable amount of battery life; but let me know if you think differently.

I was looking at the Acer Aspire's, but I've been slightly put off them now that my flat mate's Acer laptop is having overheating problems and with 75,500 search results, many others have the same problem.

I've also been looking at Samsung netbooks which looks pretty good.

Tempting to go for the bigger 11.6" screen, not sure if the 10.1" is big enough? But o/c I want a small-ish system to carry around with me.

Would be nice to hear from netbook owners who have experienced love/hate for their netbook. :P

Aye Acer lappies are notoriously troublesome (their desktop rigs aren't too shabby though).

I've had a mini fujitsu-siemens Amilo Si1520 for 3 years now - very nice working; durable, light and pretty tiny. Overall have been v happy with it - was on the pricery side though (700 quid at the time, althought I got it free on my placement)

You've been debating the same question for months, so when are you going to buy one?

Or are you being stingy and not wanting to lay out the money? ;D

I've only ever had a PC, never had a laptop or netbook, so it's a hard decision.

It's just choosing your first PC, takes a while. Took me a long time the first time I built a PC. :P Just want it to be right, that's all. ;)

Latest I've been looking at Samsung's - There was refurbished N130's on eBay (sold by Argos) for £179.99 and they dropped to £159.99 for the last few. Probably should have got that, too late now. :(

Another forum recommended Asus 1005HA, but again that's around £240 so I dunno.

Just seen a NC10 which is supposed to be better (longer battery life, better speakers, Bluetooth, 10.2" screen, etc.) for £189.99 refurbished on eBay here.

So yeah, still deciding.  ::)

you can have my Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo si1520 for £150 but it does need a new battery lol :-\ was like £750 3 years ago; still works just fine but *has* taken a fair amount of abuse since then (it was free on my placement so i didn't really mind 8)) ;)

I guess you'd class it as a notebook rather than a netbook - in fact i guess it was a bit before the netbook craze - but it is still v small and incredibly light; i'd deffo class it as an ultraportable :p but please yourself :)
