Steam Client for MAC! :D
« on: March 10, 2010, 12:35:38 am »
Hey peeps, haven't been around ina while, but when i saw this...

Steams coming to Mac + they'll let ya download any games you bought for windows for free!  ;D

Plus they say all their future releases will include Windows/Mac & 360 versions available at the same time! + Mac/Windows mixed MP support.

The big question is, will there be any advantage to playing on either side, which will have the better performance...?

 ;D

Seriously.. what the heck is with the mac hatings, and by the way macs do have a mouse  :P I didn't buy a mac to play games in the first place, since I barely ever play PC games. Being a console gamer sometimes does have its perks ;D

End of the day its still profits for Steam regardless of what type of computer you own. I see no downside to it personally.

Yes they have mice, but they are horrible to my hands and useless in nearly every way for gaming purposes (and most other purposes if you ask me :p) one button, 3d scroll, tiny non ergonomic design; it's simple all over I'm afraid :(

Besides that though, I don't see anything bad about the scheme either; I'm just saying that I think Apple will start druelling over the profits and proposition Valve to give them like 50% of all profits or prevent them from making games for the mac anymore (or something along those lines lol)... and I believe Valve in that case would just give Apple teh finger :P

I wouldn't be surprised. Anyway if Jobs ever did that he'd lose one hell of a customer base regardless.

I am looking forward to it actually, that way I don't have to run TF2 off Fusion or BootCamp.

The Mighty Mouse has 4 buttons, I agree its pretty useless for gaming(but great for page layout ;)   although 2 of my friends surprisingly do use them for gaming!  ??? (btw they have windows machines)

I think apple will welcome the move, it will just help them sell more macs.  Gaming is probably the last major advantage of getting a windows machine over a mac (in terms of features).  I don't expect lots of hardcore gamers to switch, however its more appealing to all the more casual gamers.

There is bootcamp which i use, however not to have to bother with installing a second OS on the machine makes it even more convenient.

Plus it makes an easy delivery system for the mac which could encourage other developers to follow valve in the dual release system.  :)

Have you seen the new Magic Mouse though? Pretty nifty with its touch sensitive buttons. But anywhos, still prefer the trackpad on my mac.

TF2 still = Win though. I believe they are releasing the Mac client in april? So its not long to go really

Touch sensitive buttons??? z0.m.g... who thought of that!? I'm sure it looks very minimalist artistic- but I want to fully rest my hand on the mouse when I'm not clicking stuff you know ::)

I also most definately want to be able to feel where the buttons are... maybe even "see" them? is that too much to ask from a supposedly functional product that's seen 25 years of progressive development?

If they port the games then it's a possibility both the PC and MAC games may differ. You may not see the difference i.e. different coding or you may encounter them ingame - physics, button mapping, etc.

Steam is poo anyway and promotes drm

Oh and for those who don't know the beta client is now available:
http://store.steampowered.com/macbeta/

The game coding will invariably be different because of the different libraries and drivers that must be used to build the game (unless they're using a windows port/vm type approach) - and there'll most probably be quite a few things that look quite different too because, quite frankly, opengl just doesn't look as fancy as dx.

As far as teh drm/steam topic is concerned - see here http://www.demongamers.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=173.0 I've been meaning to reply to that thread for over a year - and I do not agree so maybe we should own up that thread as it's a shame it never got going :p
